Ethiopian soldiers kill 9 Somalis Mon, 30 Jun 2008 18:56:31
Ethiopian soldiers kill nine civilians and wound 15 others in an artillery attack on Guri-el town in Galgaduud region of central Somalia. The Ethiopian forces launched the offensive after their military base came under the attack of the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) fighters in Guri-el. Residents of Mataban and Guri-el evacuated the towns as the Ethiopian troops forced them to flee their homes. Somalia has been without an effective central government since President Siad Barre was removed from power in 1991. Years of fighting between rival warlords and an inability to deal with famine and disease have led to the deaths of hundreds of thousand people in the war-torn country.
